Home Renovation-Techniques On How To Paint Concrete Floors

Written by admin on July 26th, 2010

Most garages or basement are built on concrete flooring. Concrete can be readily painted as compared to other high-end treatments. You paint your concrete floors not only for aesthetic purposes but also for practical reasons as it makes the floor easier to clean and more durable in the long run. When the painting is done the correct way it will last for years.

Where to begin:

This is not a very expensive home remodeling project but it is one that is more than an overnight project. First thing you have to do is to ensure that your floor is completely dry before starting on your painting project. Just in case you notice some wet spots, especially if it’s from the basement, it is recommended that you consult a professional to correct that seepage problem first.

Once you have determined that your floor is and will remain completely dry you will need to scrub your concrete to be sure that there is no residue of any chemicals, like grease on the floor. This is important especially if the floor is in your garage or shop area. This is critical because the paint would not be able to cling completely if there are any foreign materials present.

Actually, scrubbing the floor is a big step and if there is any type of grease on the floor, some kitty litter will absorb most of it. Next step is to scrub the floor with the use of Goof Off and then rinse it after wards. Now scrub with a mixture of TSP.  Now it will take several rinses until you can mop and have the mop remain clean. After about three days of drying, the floor is now primed for painting.

Some final preparations before you start painting:

If there are any bumpy areas on the floor’s surface or residue paint you will need to use a sander and some 80-grit paper to remove any old stuff that is stuck to the floor and make it smooth again. Remove any sanding residue that the vacuum misses with the use of a tack clothe.

Take time also to repair any visible cracks. Use Cement Fix-all to plug these cracks or little holes and be sure to let it dry thoroughly.

Finally it is time to paint!

First, you will need two applications of stain blocker and a primer like Kilz. Take note that before applying the second coating the surface must be thoroughly dried after the first coating. Now you may apply a top quality latex paint of your choosing. A paint compressor or roller may be necessary for a fine painting job.

Decorating your painted floor:

At this juncture, if you wish you may add some designs like geometric shapes or faux stone to make the floor look even more beautiful. You may let your creative juices flowing at this point, just be sure to let the floor dry thoroughly before finishing.

How to finish your newly-painted concrete floor:

You will need a quarter inch nap roller and two applications of Breakthrough sealer to finish your floor. This is full of fumes so a respirator mask is a must here. Allow the floor to thoroughly dry for one final time.

Now you have already finished your new floor. You may want to use an area rug or some throw rugs as it is still concrete. The difference is that it is now a beautiful concrete!
